What font is the brat album cover?

Arial. Lowercase, regular weight, stretched wider than it comes. That is the entire answer, and the reason it is worth 900 more words is that almost everyone gets the stretching part wrong.

The plain answer

The cover of Charli XCX's 2024 album uses Arial. Not a custom face, not a licensed display font, not something from a foundry. The typeface that comes free with every copy of Windows and every Mac, the one nobody chooses on purpose.

Special Offer Inc. handled the packaging. Charli XCX has described picking Arial for being unpretentious, then stretching it so it had some personality, and positioning it awkwardly so the cover looked neither modest nor showy.

Why people think it is Arial Narrow

Search results are full of pages claiming the cover uses Arial Narrow. It does not, and the mistake is understandable: on the record the letters sit tightly together and fill the square, which reads as condensed.

What is actually happening is the opposite. The letters are stretched horizontally, making each one wider, and they look packed because the type is enormous relative to the frame. Set genuine Arial Narrow next to the cover and the difference is obvious. Narrow is thin and upright. The cover is wide and squat.

Quick test Set your generator to Arial Narrow with stretch at 1.0, then to Brat classic with stretch at 1.15. The second one is the record.

How much stretch, exactly

Between 1.10 and 1.20. We landed on 1.15 as the default after putting exports next to the cover art at the same size and squinting for longer than we would like to admit.

This is a horizontal scale, not a font-stretch property. Real condensed and expanded faces are drawn that way, with the stroke weights adjusted to compensate. Scaling Arial sideways distorts the strokes: verticals get fatter while horizontals stay put. A type designer would call that wrong, and that wrongness is exactly what the cover is doing on purpose.

Liberation Sans is worth knowing about. It is metrically identical to Arial, meaning every character occupies exactly the same width, and it is free to use and redistribute. If you are building something that has to render the same for everyone, that is the font to ship.

Do not download a "brat font"

Search for one and you will find dozens of sites offering a file. There is no such font. What those downloads contain is either Arial, which you already have and which they have no right to distribute, or a lookalike renamed to catch the search traffic. A few carry installers you do not want.

Nothing on this site downloads a font. The generator uses whatever your device already has, which is also why the page loads in well under a second and keeps working with your wifi switched off.

Free fonts that get close

Liberation Sans is the exact match. Same widths as Arial, open licence.
Arimo is the same design under a different name, available through Google Fonts.
Helvetica is closer than most people expect, though the lowercase a and the R differ.
Roboto is what most Android phones use anyway. Slightly narrower and a bit more geometric.
Inter is not a great match. It is more open and modern, and covers made with it read as clean rather than careless.

For a cover, none of this matters much. Export a PNG and the font question disappears, because the letters become pixels.
