The right image size for every app
Exporting too small is the most common thing that goes wrong with a brat cover, and it is the one mistake you cannot fix afterwards. Here is the number to use for each place your image might end up.
Every size, one table
| Where it goes | Export | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram feed post | 1080 x 1080 | PNG or JPG | Square avoids any crop |
| Instagram profile photo | 1080 x 1080 | JPG | Cropped to a circle, so keep text centred |
| Instagram story background | 1080 x 1920 | PNG | Export square, then place it on a story |
| TikTok profile photo | 1080 x 1080 | JPG | Displays as a circle at about 100 pixels |
| TikTok video cover | 1080 x 1920 | PNG | Only the middle third shows in the feed grid |
| WhatsApp profile photo | 1080 x 1080 | JPG | Heavily recompressed, so start large |
| X profile photo | 1080 x 1080 | PNG | Circle crop, 400 pixel minimum |
| Discord server icon | 1024 x 1024 | PNG | Circle crop unless you have boosts |
| Reddit avatar | 1080 x 1080 | PNG | Anything over 256 is fine |
| YouTube channel icon | 1080 x 1080 | PNG | 800 x 800 recommended, 1080 is safer |
| YouTube thumbnail | 1280 x 720 | JPG | Not square, so use the square as one element |
| Spotify playlist cover | 1500 x 1500 | JPG | Under 4 MB, minimum 300 x 300 |
| Spotify or Apple release art | 3000 x 3000 | JPG | Apple will not take less for a new release |
| Printed sticker | 2000 x 2000 | PNG | Check the CMYK values before you send it |
| A2 poster | 3000 x 3000 | PNG | Fine at arm's length, soft up close |
Platforms change these without announcing it. If something looks wrong, check the app's own help page rather than any table on the internet, this one included.
Why upscaling ruins a blurred cover specifically
Enlarging any image invents pixels that were never captured. On a photograph you get softness. On a brat cover you get something worse, because the design already contains a deliberate blur, and the two blurs stack.
The result reads as a corrupted file rather than a style, which is also why music distributors reject this kind of artwork. Export at 1200 minimum for anything social, and 3000 for anything commercial, and the problem never comes up.
Blur in our generator is measured against the canvas, not in fixed pixels, so a setting of 3 looks identical at 1080 and at 3000. Change the size and the design stays put.
Designing for a circular crop
Profile photos are circles on nearly every platform now. A square design loses its corners, which for a brat cover means losing the edge tension the design depends on.
Two adjustments fix it. Raise the margin to about 12 percent so the letters sit inside the circle. Drop the blur to 1 or below, because a 100 pixel circle destroys anything softer. The name tag template already has both.
If it is going on paper
Screens mix light and printers mix ink, and brat green sits close to the edge of what ink can reach. A printed version will look duller than your screen no matter what you do. Nothing is broken; that is the gamut.
For a sticker or a small poster, 2000 by 2000 is plenty. Send the printer the CMYK values and ask whether a spot colour is worth it if the green has to match exactly.
Pick your size and export
Size questions
What size should I export for Instagram?
A square 1080 by 1080 covers feed posts and profile photos. Stories want 1080 by 1920, which is a different shape, so export the square and place it on a story background rather than trying to make the generator produce a tall image.
Is bigger always better?
Up to a point. Exporting at 3000 for an avatar wastes a few seconds and a few megabytes but does no harm. Exporting at 400 for anything is a mistake you cannot undo, because upscaling invents detail that was never there.
PNG or JPG?
PNG for anything with a transparent background or crisp edges. JPG for photos and for anywhere with an upload size limit. A flat colour with text compresses beautifully either way, so file size rarely decides it.
My image looks blurry after uploading. Why?
Almost always because the export was too small and the app enlarged it. Re-export at 1500 or higher. Instagram and WhatsApp also recompress everything, which softens a blur that was already soft.
