What brat summer actually meant

A record label put out a green square with a blurry word on it and within seven weeks a presidential campaign was using the same green. This is how that happened, and why the format is still going long after the summer ended.

It started with a record nobody expected to look like that

Charli XCX released her sixth studio album on 7 June 2024 through Atlantic Records. The cover was a flat rectangle of #8ACE00 with the word set in lowercase Arial, stretched sideways and slightly blurred. No photograph. No artist name in any prominent position. Nothing that looked designed.

Special Offer Inc. did the packaging. Brent David Freaney has described working through roughly 500 shades of green, and the team did not pick a favourite. They picked the one that made people in the room uncomfortable. Charli XCX has said she wanted an offensive, off-trend shade that triggered the idea of something being wrong.

Design that repels is a strange thing to commission for a pop album. It is also the reason you can identify the cover from across a room at thumbnail size, which is worth more than being pretty.

Why it spread instead of just existing

Most album art cannot be copied. A photograph of an artist belongs to that artist. A green rectangle with a word on it belongs to anyone with a text box.

That is the whole mechanism. The cover is reproducible by a teenager on a phone in under a minute, and every reproduction advertises the original. Generators appeared within days. People put their own names on it, their group chat's name, their dissertation title, their cat. Each one was legible as a reference and as a joke at the same time.

Compare that to a campaign built on a beautifully shot photograph. Nobody remakes those, because you cannot.

The seven weeks that took it somewhere strange

On 22 July 2024, Charli XCX posted three words on X: "kamala IS brat". She has since said she wrote it from a swimming pool without thinking of it as a political statement.

By the next day the Harris campaign's X account was running a banner in brat green, lowercase, reading "kamala hq". A record sleeve released six weeks earlier had become the visual identity of a presidential campaign's rapid response operation.

Whatever you think of that, it is a useful demonstration of what happens when a design is simple enough to be reproduced by anyone and specific enough to be recognised by everyone.

A dictionary made it official

On 1 November 2024, Collins Dictionary named brat its word of the year. The new definition they added: characterised by a confident, independent and hedonistic attitude. The old definition, an ill-mannered child, stayed in place underneath it.

Dictionaries are slow by design. When one moves this fast, it is because the usage was already everywhere and pretending otherwise had become the odd position.

Why people still make these in 2026

The trend ended. The format did not, and the two things get confused.

What survived is a way of saying something with no image, no design skill and no software: pick a colour, type four words in lowercase, blur it slightly. It reads as confident and slightly unserious, which is a tone people want constantly and had no shorthand for before.

We cannot tell you what people type into this generator, because it never reaches us. What we can say is what arrives in our inbox: requests for longer text limits, line breaks, and colours that are not green. Almost nobody writes in asking for help making the word "brat". The reference has become the container, and people are putting their own things in it.
